Common questions

Still On The Fence?

I already have a training regime to burn calories, though?

In terms of calories, Muay Thai sits in roughly the same range as a hard HIIT session, somewhere between 500 and 900 an hour depending on effort. So it's not about out-burning what you're already doing, it's about what the effort is doing to your mind during a session.

How would just hitting pads make any difference to my wandering mind?

During most cardio or circuit training, your mind is free to wander while your body works. You can grind through a spin class or a set of burpees and still be thinking about your inbox. Pad work doesn't let you do that. You're either present or you're not.

This level of concentration and belief in your own ability will carry over into rebuilding your sense of calm in the rest of your life.

I'm still not sure.

There's research behind this too. Combat sports specifically have been linked to reductions in anxiety and stress, and to real improvements in emotional regulation and focus, in a way that's distinct from general cardio benefits. Directing effort at a target, with technique behind it, with an aim for improvement in each session. This creates a different kind of release and deep resilience than any steady-state training.

I've never properly exercised before, this all seems too much to start with.

Don't worry if you're not training at all right now, don't be put off. I know it all sounds demanding. We work at your pace and your fitness level, taking as many breaks as needed during the session and building your cardio step by step. The technique is what you're here to learn, and you'll get fit learning it.

It sounds like fancy circuit training, just with pads?

Training Muay Thai with me is not a circuit you repeat week to week expecting the same thing back. You're building a skill: footwork, timing, combinations, so every session adds to something, and you're evolving. A much different reward to chasing an improved time or a heavier set.

How will Muay Thai improve my discipline?

The structure around Muay Thai, the discipline and the respect-based culture, exists to channel effort through focus and control, not celebrate aggression. That's the part you don't expect until you're actually in a session. That anger we all experience from time to time is extinguished and transferred into positive energy, energy that breeds coordination, control, and inner clarity.

I don't want to give up the exercise I'm doing currently.

My coaching isn't here to replace what you're already doing. If you're already training in yoga, pilates, or spin, you don't need another way to get fit. You've already got that covered. What you're missing is a different kind of intensity, one that most training formats can't give you. Having Muay Thai in your fitness arsenal gives your mind something nothing else can.
